Exclusive: Aleks Paunovic from ‘See’ with Jason Momoa
Aleks Paunovic is an actor with a long and impressive resume, starring in high-caliber television shows like Battlestar Galactica, Supernatural, Smallville, and Arrow. He has been in many movies over the years including Kindergarten Cop 2 and War for the Planet of the Apes. More recently he has had recurring roles on Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, Van Helsing and Snowpiercer. We chatted with Aleks Paunovic about working with Jason Momoa back on Stargate Atlantis and then reuniting on See from Apple TV+, as well as his roles on Snowpiercer and an upcoming movie from Enderby Entertainment called 92.
You starred in an episode of Stargate Atlantis as Rakai with Jason Momoa back in 2007 that was Ronon Dex focused. Tell us what it was like to work with Jason so early in his career?
It was interesting, I was just starting to act a bit after playing music in a metal band called Specula Black until my late 20’s, so I was a little green, and self conscious because of how big I am at 6’5″ and 260 pounds. We are actually releasing some old demos on Spotify. It drops Nov 26th – take a listen and follow us (Editor Note: check out Aleks on bass in the Metallica cover below!).
Up until Stargate I had never worked with a big guy. Then I met Jason and I was like, yeah man, big guys can do it too. Made me feel comfortable. I’m a dude’s dude. I like drinking and fighting. So we hit it off right away. There’s actually a great improv that he did on our first scene that tells you how comfortable we were together right off the bat. And I didn’t know he was gonna smack me across the face. Haha. It surprised me. But it was hilarious for the scene.
Talk about filming the fight scene between your character and Jason’s on See?
Yes!!! One of my fav roles – period! That was such a blast! With that scene, Jason and I know how to fight and trust each other, and he’s so collaborative and creative. So it wasn’t work, just a couple kids in the sandbox having a blast. And that’s rare. The right people make it like that.
You play Bojan Boscovic in Snowpiercer. Tell us about your character and what the show is about?
I love Snowpiercer! I love the film, and after reading the scripts for the show I was blown away! And I really love my character Bojan. He’s a breachman, which means he does the most dangerous job on the train, and that’s going outside of the train to fix anything. In the show the train is considered an ark and all the humans on the train is what’s left of mankind. The temperature outside is an unlivable -119°. The only way for people to survive is to keep the train moving. And that’s where it gets rolling. Our second season is coming out on TNT. I can’t wait for the fans to see what is in store for them.
You will be co-starring in the thriller 92 from Enderby Entertainment. Tell us what the movie is about and what it was like to film during the pandemic?
Well, we are in a pandemic and one of my good friends Rick Dugdale was ready to go overseas to shoot his new movie he was producing. The pandemic stopped it. So his whole team is antsy, just wanting to be creative. They came up with an idea of, what if we can make a movie without a handshake? Call our friends all over the world and we shoot this only on Zoom, FaceTime, drone, and security cam footage. Should be easy right? It wasn’t, haha. But it was a blast! All the actors were their own audio and camera crew. And we communicated over Zoom. What’s amazing is that I just saw the cast and crew screening and I’m blown away by it!! Rick Dugdale directed it and he did a wonderful job. Such a weird way to make a film, but we needed something to be creative and Rick made that happen.
I have a film called Chained which is doing the festival circuit. Our 5th and final season of Van Helsing will be released on Syfy by the end of the year. And second season of Snowpiercer will air in the new year. And at the moment I’m in NYC shooting a very secret project. I can’t wait to share it with the world. And when I do, JMN will be the first to know (Editor Note: YAY!!).
Anything else you want to tell us about?
I want to add how I love JMN. You guys are so dedicated to Jason and I know why. He’s one of the best dudes. My friendship with him is very special. Years ago on Stargate after our first day working and meeting him, he invited me for drinks after work. Now remember, this is the first day meeting the man, he invited me to his home and we drank whisky and played guitar and talked about our dreams. He was saying how he wanted to take it to the next level. How he wanted to direct, how he wants to make an impact in the world, so the more famous he is the more he can help the world. It was such a fantastic night of music, passion for life and making a difference and a lot of whisky. And years later… he did it!! He did what he said he was gonna do. It’s inspiring. And the dude keeps inspiring. I’m very grateful to have a buddy like Jason Momoa in my corner. PLUS! His mom is the best!!! (Editor Note: we agree- Coni is amazing!)
